Houston: Protect Yourself in 2012! Fire Safety Billboards Unveiled All Over Houston
Houston Fire Department, State Farm Insurance, and Clear
Channel Outdoors Broaden Safety Campaign in 2012
One of every three residential fires in Houston reported the home had a
malfunctioning smoke detector, or no smoke detector at all.
To raise awareness and save lives, the Houston Fire Department (HFD),
State Farm Insurance, and Clear Channel Outdoors have funded 20
billboards reminding Houston citizens of the importance of installing a
functioning smoke detector in the home. The signs read: “A $5 Smoke
Detector Saved Our Lives! Install Smoke Detectors in Your Home Today!”
“Fire doubles in size every 30 seconds,” said HFD Assistant Chief Lisa
Campbell. “Although most fires are preventable, they do happen, and a
working smoke detector gives you and your family the extra minutes
needed to safely get out of your home.”
HFD recommends residents check, change, and replace: Check batteries at
least once a month. Change batteries when you set your clocks forwards
and backwards for daylight saving time. And completely replace smoke
detectors at least once every 10 years. Some Houston residents may
qualify for a free smoke detector through the HFD “Get Alarmed!”
program. To check eligibility, please visit www.houstonfire.org. This
awareness campaign is funded by a State Farm Insurance Good Neighbor
Grant that the HFD received in 2011.
“Just five dollars and a few preparation could potentially save your
family’s life,” said State Farm Spokesperson Patti Kelly. “We’re
thrilled to be involved with this effort and we commend the efforts of
Chief Garrison and all the members of the Houston Fire Department for
their service to the community.”
Clear Channel Outdoors offered the ad-space for the 20 billboards
throughout the city at a greatly reduced price (see list).
“This campaign, which runs through October, will tie into the National
Fire Prevention Theme for this year as well ‘Protect Your Family from
Fire,’ said Campbell. “With this in mind, we would like to remind
citizens that a practiced escape plan is vital, even if you have a
working smoke detector.”
Additional information about smoke detectors and safety tips may be
found on the HFD website at www.houstonfire.org. Citizens may also
