"Uprooted: Braceros in the Hermanos Mayo Lens" Photography Exhibit until January 30, 2012
This collection is on loan from Arte Publico Press. The Hermanos Mayo
were five Republican refugees who fought in the Spanish Civil War and
later formed what became one of the most prolific collectives of
photojournalists in the history of Latin America. The Hermanos Mayo's
experience of the history they lived in Europe gave them a different
perspective from that of their Mexican colleagues. Because of their past
as refugees and their life-status as workers, the Hermanos Mayo
identified with the Braceros. The photographers depict the oppression of
the Braceros while revealing a powerful and penetrating vision of their
lives.
