Matthew
wins Champion Get-of- Sire at the 2010 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo
The Texas Longhorn Bull, Matthew, won Get-of-Sire at
the 2010 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s Texas Longhorn Show. He
was raised and is owned by Joe and Debbie Assad.
Get-of-Sire is the highest honor a breeding bull can
win. Three or more of a bull’s offspring is shown against three or
more offspring of other bulls. Judge Justin Hansand, an agricultural
extension agent from Nocona, Texas chose the offspring of Matthew as the
most consistent in quality.
The 10-year old Matthew has won Get-of-Sire at the
International Texas Longhorn Championship Show in 2007, 2008, and 2009
but this is his first win at the Houston Livestock Show.
Matthew is descended from a line of champions. His
sire Moses, also raised by the Assads, won Get-of-Sire in 1999. His
grandsire Senator and great-grand sires Overwhelmer and Bail Jumper have
also won Get-of-Sire at Championship Shows, but only Matthew has won it
three years in a row.
Matthew’s son James 5:7 and daughters Colossians
3:16 and Psalm 34:1 were the offspring who won Get-of-Sire for Matthew
at the 2010 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The Assads name their
cattle out of the Bible, “because we live and work in Houston and only
get to the ranch [near Brenham] on the weekends since good things are
happening, it’s the Lord’s doing and we want to give credit where
credit is due.”
Matthew has another unique feature. He has his own
page on Facebook with over 2000 friends worldwide. There he is known as
Matthew TxLonghorn.
