Wildlife
Rehab & Education Center prepares for the aftermath of Hurricane
Alex
The Wildlife Rehab & Education Center, Houston’s
only wildlife trauma hospital for ALL species of injured, ill and
orphaned wildlife is reminding the public to be on the look out for
wildlife impacted by Hurricane Alex.
The Houston Gulf Coast area and surrounding counties
are still in the middle of a very active baby season. The aftermath of
this hurricane continues to bring heavy rain and wind to our area and
many baby birds and squirrels could possibly be blown from their nests
and orphaned.
If you find injured or orphaned wildlife after hours,
put it in a box with soft rags, keep it as warm as possible, and place
in a quiet, safe dark place. Do not attempt to give the animal any food
or water and take it the WR&E Center in the morning.
The WR&E Center is open 7 days a week from 9 a.m.
to 6 p.m. Monday – Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday & Sunday
and will take any native injured and orphaned wildlife you may find
after the storm. The WR&E Center is located at 7007 Katy Road, near
the Houston SPCA. Their phone number is 713-861-9453. Log onto their
website at www.WRandE.org
for more information on how to care for these animals until you are able
to bring them to the center.
