Bayou City Concert Musicals 2010-2011 Season

THE BRIGHT AND BRASSY “GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES”

CABARETS: THE MUSIC OF GEORGE GERSHWIN AND RODGERS AND HART

BAYOU CITY CONCERT MUSICALS presents the bright and brassy, song and dance extravaganza, GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES, opening Thursday, September 9 and playing through Sunday, September 12, for FIVE PERFORMANCES ONLY. Performance times for the staged concert version are Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at The Heinen Theatre, 3517 Austin at Holman in Midtown. The production is directed by Paul Hope, with Art Yelton as Musical Director, Krissy Richmond as Choreographer and Dominique Royem as the Conductor.

GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES could arguably be called the quintessential Broadway song and dance musical set in the flapper era of the 1920s, replete with hilarious miscues and misadventures, stunning dances and memorable songs. “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend,” “Bye Bye Baby,” “A Little Girl From Little Rock,” and “It’s High Time,” are just a few of the most well known of the twenty or more songs in the musical. Set during the wild and exciting days of the flapper era, two beautiful fun loving girls, Lorelei Lee and her best friend, Dorothy Shaw, prepare to board the Ile de France for a journey to Paris. The story is of their hilarious misadventures as they meet a menagerie of colorful characters on board the ship and in Paris.

This season BCCM will offer two cabarets. Our cabaret programs support the mission of spotlighting under-performed works of the American musical stage by educating audiences about the history of American classic music. Artistic Director Paul Hope, who serves as master of ceremonies weaves the history of the music and its creators into a special evening of song. The cabaret evenings take place at the Performance Centre at the Ensemble Theatre, 3535 Main at Berry, entrance on Fannin and Berry, at 7:30 p.m. on three consecutive Monday nights.

“STAIRWAY TO PARADISE: THE EARLY SONGS OF GEORGE GERSHWIN” is scheduled for three consecutive Monday nights in February 2011. George Gershwin ranks in the top five composers of American popular music along with Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers, Cole Porter and Irving Berlin. At the age of 17, he wrote his first national megahit, “Swanee.” He excelled not only in writing popular music, but also in writing classical music; symphonies, opera and ballets, and was an accomplished classical pianist.

“I’LL TAKE MANHATTAN: THE SONGS OF RODGERS AND HART” is scheduled for the first three consecutive Monday nights in May 2011 and rounds out the Bayou City Concert Musicals 2010-2011 season. One of the most prolific writing teams of the time, many of their songs have become standards in the music of today. A few of the songs included in the cabaret are “Where or When,” “Blue Moon,” “Falling in Love With Love” and “Johnnie One Note.”

BCCM is funded in part by a grant from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.
