HCC students perform real world cancer research at Baylor College of Medicine
Houston Community College partners with Baylor College of
Medicine on Biomedical Research
Houston Community College Southeast boasts its fifth successful summer
partnering with Baylor College of Medicine. The eight-week training
opportunity allows students to fully participate in biomedical research
at Baylor which, in conjunction with unfettered access to discussions
with educated scientists, helps students decide whether or not to pursue
careers in research.
The summer internship program was developed in 2007. Students are chosen
by Dr. Mahtash Moussavi, Chair of the Natural Sciences at HCC-Southeast
and they are placed in labs by Dr. Steven Ressler, Program Director for
the HCC Summer Science Intern Program. This year, the internship program
hails six students who are working under the tutelage of skilled
researchers and scientists in Baylor’s laboratories. The students are
from a predominately underserved community on Houston’s East End.
The students are working on real solutions that may provide cures for
cancer, spinal cord injuries, and protein misfolding diseases like
Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, and more… The internship culminates with a
fifteen minute presentation to their lab group. This year, the interns
also participated in an enrichment course entitled “Window into Clinical
Immunology” that was organized by Dr. Lenora Noroski, Associate
Director, Fellowship Program Allergy and Immunology Texas Children’s
Hospital-Baylor College of Medicine.
