Hole Designs Revealed for Insperity Golf Experience at Discovery Green
HOUSTON – Aug. 16, 2011 – Local artists for the InsperityTM Golf
Experience at Discovery Green reveal details of their designs for the
nine-hole miniature golf course. The artfully crafted course reflects
the artists’ talents, inspirations and hobbies. Their creations will be
located on the Sarofim Picnic Lawn for park visitors to play a round of
miniature golf from Sept. 1 through Nov. 27, 2011. Hours of operation
are 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Thursdays – Sundays.
This interactive art exhibition was curated by Clint Willour. Artists
creating holes for the Insperity Golf Experience at Discovery Green
include:
GONZO247 of Aerosol Warfare
Manager and lead artist at Aerosol Warfare Gallery, GONZO247 called upon
his graffiti art background to create a fun and challenging hole, “Holy
Moley.” Golfers will putt through a series of ramps and obstacles, while
marveling at the hole’s urban look and graffiti feel.
The Art Guys
The work of Michael Galbreth and Jack Massing has been seen in over 150
locations around the world. While they seek to expand the dialog and
boundaries of art, the pair utilizes a wide range of materials and
activities. They have used more traditional materials – plywood and
green carpet – to create “A Sure Thing.” At this hole, golfers putt
their ball down a narrow ramp and are guaranteed a hole-in-one.
Elaine Bradford
Best known for her series of crochet work, Bradford will once again
dazzle the art community with “Hole in the Sidereal.” In addition to the
Insperity Golf Experience at Discovery Green, Bradford is involved with
Houston arts organizations including BOX 13 ArtSpace, DiverseWorks and
Lawndale Art Center.
Bill Davenport
Davenport’s hole, “Deux Buffet,” reflects another well-known work at
Discovery Green: “Monument Au Fantome” by Jean Dubuffet. The
mini-replica of this well-known artwork challenges golfers to putt
either around or through the imaginary city created by Jean Dubuffet.
Noah Edmundson
Edmundson’s work can be seen throughout Houston, including Lawndale,
Blaffer Gallery, DiverseWorks and now, Discovery Green. Edmundson is a
former oil rig equipment fabricator who turned metal art sculptor and
designer and now serves as Director of the Art Car Museum. His golf hole
is a sleek and slithery “Snake Hole” for the course out of plywood, turf
and steel.
Jonathan Leach
Leach’s artwork will enliven Discovery Green with its array of bold,
colorful patterns. The elevated design, “Short Cut Putt,” will challenge
golfers to hit their ball up ramps and through other obstacles or take a
short cut.
Jason Makepeace
Makepeace will contribute a dynamic component to the InsperityTM Golf
Experience at Discovery Green. The design combines his knowledge in
multiple mediums having worked alongside bronze sculptors, custom
carpenters and marble sculptors. Makepeace has shared his artistic
talents at the University of Houston, High School for Performing and
Visual Art and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. He will create “Fishin
Hole” with Seth Mittag at Discovery Green.
Seth Mittag
Like much of his work, Mittag’s design for the Insperity Golf Experience
at Discovery Green incorporates his influence working as a professional
puppet maker and his love for storytelling. “Fishin Hole,” created with
Jason Makepeace, reflects his passion for fishing and is equipped with
small kayaks and self portraits.
Anthony Thompson Shumate
As a contemporary sculptor, Shumate combines corporate designs and
contemporary aesthetics to create a subversive commentary on the modern
American social landscape. In his larger-than-life pinball machine, “The
Galactic Forfeit Cowboy Lounge,” created for the InsperityTM Golf
Experience at Discovery Green, golfers place their ball on a spring
launcher in an attempt to sink their putt.
Emily Sloan
Golfers will need a great deal of precision when facing “Sloan Winding
Landscape.” The landscape-inspired structure is equipped with several
cut-out holes, which golfers will need to shoot directly through in
order to complete the hole.
Admission fees are $5 per adult player and $3 for children under the age
of 12. Group discounts are available.
